NACA is creating a new position to oversee our organizing efforts both in support of our mortgage programs as well as our new multi-state ballot initiative campaign. NACA’s mission is to make affordable homeownership a right for everyone and to fight for economic justice. The Organizing Director will work directly with NACA’s CEO to build and manage a nationwide department responsible for outreach in support of NACA’s mortgage programs and the organizing and participation in our precedent setting multi-state ballot initiative campaign.
Outreach: The Organizing Director will oversee community organizers in NACA’s 40+ local offices. Organizers engage NACA’s members to increase the participation in NACA’s purchase and HomeSave programs. They also work with community organizations, politicians, and government people to obtain referrals to NACA and access to government assistance to support NACA’s programs. We are expanding the participation component for NACA members to include neighborhood community organizing to establish neighborhood associations and work with existing and future community partners and organizations.
Campaigns: NACA’s campaigns and advocacy include extensive research, targeted litigation, regulatory advocacy, legislative and ballot initiatives, demonstrations, and actions. Demonstrations and actions may be targeted against individuals, corporations and government entities that are on the wrong side of fair lending and economic justice issues. These sometimes require non-violent civil disobedience with the Organizing Director and staff being in the forefront of these actions. NACA’s advocacy approach is based on confrontational, aggressive direct action. Our actions and campaigns often confront the CEOs and decision makers where they live and where they socialize. The Director of Organizing will be responsible for involving Members and supporters in these actions.
The Organizers engage, coordinate and lead over one million NACA Members, supporters and others in these activities. The Organizing Department will establish a structure to organize and involve Members and others through NACA Neighborhood Stabilization Communities (NSCs) which are committees of the NACA Homeowners and Members in a community. The NSCs are the foundation for NACA’s community advocacy on both the local and national level.
A major, new NACA initiative is the Ballot Initiative Campaign. The Organizing Director will create and implement a process to organize NACA Members and others to collect signatures for ballot initiatives in up to twenty states. After the certification of the ballot initiatives, the Organizing Director will involve NACA Members and others in the campaign to win the elections. This is a long-term capacity building campaign beginning with the 2016 cycle and building for future ballot and advocacy campaigns.
