NACA ASSISTING THOUSANDS OF TENANTS NATIONWIDE IN ACCESSING EMERGENCY RENTAL ASSISTANCE

NACA is Stepping In and Stepping Up To Fill the Void for Renters

(BOSTON- August 30, 2021) – With the Supreme Court’s elimination of the eviction moratorium resulting in millions of renters being at risk of being evicted, NACA is reaching out to its more than 3 million members to assist them and countless others in accessing $47 Billion in Emergency Rental Assistance (“ERA”).  NACA has the track record and is in a unique position to step into this eviction crisis and step-up by providing crucial support just as NACA did during the mortgage crisis.

The overwhelming number of NACA Members and their communities are low- to moderate -income individuals and people of color with the highest percentage of at-risk renters. NACA is the only organization in the country with the necessary experience and grassroots network to provide support and advocacy on a massive nationwide scale.

NACA has already taken the first step by engaging thousands of renters and obtaining crucial information for them to obtain ERA funds. (Click here to access the outreach Chat Bot: https://smpl.chat/c/naca-renters.)

The next step is for tenants to work with a NACA Economic Justice Advocate (“EJA”) to assist them through the complicated bureaucratic process of accessing these funds. The EJAs have the expertise to navigate the many providers, all of which have different criteria and processes making it extremely difficult for a tenant or landlord to access the ERA.  They will continue to advocate for both tenants and landlords throughout the process to access these crucial funds.

The current eviction crisis is very similar to 2008 when the government did not provide the means or leadership to modify mortgages on a large scale. NACA, the nation’s largest HUD approved housing counseling agency, was the most effective organization in filling this void. NACA conducted 144 massive Save-the-Dream Events, successfully modifying mortgages for more than 250,000 families, often the very same day.  Similarly, this eviction crisis has already overwhelmed the government which has just a handful of staff on the federal level and no effective coordination among the over 700 entities providing ERA assistance.

Massive numbers of struggling tenants will be unable to pay thousands of dollars of rental arrearages and future rent coming out of the uncharted and overwhelming waters of the Covid-19 crisis.  “We are expanding our services to avert a national tsunami with potentially millions of renters being evicted.” stated Bruce Marks, NACA’s founder and CEO.  “This is just like during the mortgage crisis when NACA provided the needed information and documentation to the lenders and worked with them to reduce homeowner’s monthly mortgage payments by hundreds and often thousands of dollars a month. NACA is in the perfect position to deliver this assistance to those most in need nationwide given its outreach and operational systems. We need the federal government to provide the leadership and accountability including requiring any developer or property owner receiving government assistance to not to evict tenants and to access the ERA.”

The vast majority of tenants do not have the savings to pay their unpaid rent, and many have large landlords who have no ethical or moral standards and are eager to throw the tenants out into the streets.  This means evicted tenants must either move in with their overburdened family during this pandemic or live on the streets or in their cars.  This is a situation that must not be allowed to happen in America, and NACA is again in the forefront in assisting many thousands of families in keeping a roof over their heads!
